Quimbaya Ron Artesanal
Craft from the Cane, Power to the People: The Rum That Rewrote the Rules and kicked-off a new independence of the small local Colombian sugar cane farmers.
Background
Until recently, rum production in Colombia was monopolized. A new law finally gave smallholders the right to legally distill their own spirits. The first step into a more inclusive, decentralized rum industry.
Brief
Together with Casa Domecq and Fedepanela, the mission was to empower over 25,000 small sugar cane farmers with a sustainable business model and brand built from the ground up.
Solution
Since it’s Colombia’s very first legal artisanal rum, we couldn’t approach the project just as a product – this is a movement.
Diving into the world of the “trapiches” – traditional cane grinders powered by animals or human effort, who often come from conflict zones or indigenous reserves, ensuring a diversity of rums with different aromas.
Casa Pedro Domecq together with the organization Fedepanela provided approximately 25.000 rural panela producers throughout Colombia a new, better livelihood and enable them to operate independently.
naturally crafted
Given the nature of the project, we kept the design in line: an earthy, crafted, and honest look with a rooted typography and labels printed on sugarcane paper to honor the material and makers alike.
